Event BenchFusion Fall 2026 starts on Aug 22, 2026, 9:30:00 AM (US/Eastern)
Jobs We Should Have Refused
8/23/26, 2:00 PM - 8/23/26, 3:00 PM (US/Eastern) (1 hour)

Every jeweler has at least one repair story that still makes them wince. The piece that arrived already compromised. The alloy that behaved badly. The stone that looked fine until it wasn’t. Or the customer request that felt risky but hard to refuse in the moment.

This candid panel brings together experienced bench jewelers to share real repair cases where the risks were higher than anyone realized at intake. Panelists will walk through what the early warning signs were, why they agreed to take the job anyway, what actually happened, and how they would handle the same situation today.

Rather than focusing on blame or technique, the discussion centers on judgment. It looks at how risk shows up in subtle ways and how good intentions can quietly turn into expensive problems.

We will cover:

  1. Structural red flags that signal a repair may not be salvageable.
  2. Alloys, stones, and past work that introduce hidden risk.
  3. Customer expectations that create liability before work even begins.
  4. The real costs of trying to save a piece that cannot be saved.
  5. How to say no at the counter without damaging the relationship.
  6. Ways intake staff and bench jewelers can make aligned decisions.

The session also explores how clear communication and shared standards protect both the customer experience and the integrity of the shop. Saying no is not a failure. In many cases, it is the most professional decision a jeweler can make.

This session blends storytelling, practical judgment, and hard earned wisdom. Attendees will leave with sharper instincts for evaluating risk, better language for difficult conversations, and more confidence in choosing when to step back rather than push forward.

About us

The Atlanta Jewelry Show was founded on a simple but powerful idea ...
A trade show should serve the people who make it possible.

From its earliest days, the Southern Jewelry Travelers Association, a 501(c)(6) nonprofit, set out to create a show where every decision would contribute to the shared success of jewelers, manufacturers, and sales professionals across the Southeast. It was built not as a commercial enterprise, but as a community investment in the future of the jewelry industry.
